What is breast cancer?

Breast cancer is a group of diseases in which cells in breast tissue grow abnormally. Established risk factors, screening, and treatments are defined by oncology guidelines and organizations such as the National Cancer Institute. How this may relate to Alpha-1 (hypothesis)

Alpha-1 Antitrypsin (AAT) is a protective protein. In classic AATD, low or dysfunctional AAT is linked to lung and liver disease. Mark Egly's patent explores whether low circulating AAT and excess neutrophil elastase may also influence pathways involved in tumor biology, including in breast tissue.

The patent discusses AAT together with thrombospondin-1 (TSP1), a protein involved in regulating new blood vessel growth. It proposes that healthier circulating AAT may support protective biology in lung and breast tissue. That proposal is a research hypothesis, not a proven treatment path for anyone with breast cancer.

What Mark Egly's patent discusses about breast cancer

The patent names many forms of breast cancer, including metastatic breast cancer (MBC), ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC), triple negative breast cancer, inflammatory breast cancer (IBC), medullary, tubular carcinoma, mucinous carcinoma, Paget disease, and small cell and non-small cell presentations of breast cancer.

It notes that smoking can reduce AAT and that secondhand smoke is associated with some cancer risk discussions in the literature. Those observations sit alongside the patent's broader claim that restoring healthier AAT levels might reduce injury from excess neutrophil activity. Independent clinical validation is still required.
